p53 and the response to oncogenic stress

p53 is switched on when cells are in danger from different kinds of attacks or problems which might happen during the development of cancer. When p53 is working, it stops the cell growing while damage is repaired, but if the damage is too severe, p53 can force the cell to commit suicide instead of growing into a tumour.
